How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Actually Need?

After 25+ years photographing weddings across Tasmania and as far as Queensland, we’ve found the sweet spot: 5–6 hours of coverage captures the most important moments without unnecessary extras. We love what we do and our couples, and our experience (Brides Choice Award 2019–2025) helps us make smart recommendations that save you time and money.

Why 5–6 Hours Works

Five to six hours typically gives excellent value and relaxed coverage. In that window we can capture:

  • Getting-ready moments (bride and groom preparations)
  • First look or ceremony
  • Couple portraits and bridal-party shots
  • Family formals
  • Key reception highlights (entrance, speeches, first dance)

This length keeps the day feeling natural and relaxed rather than rushed or over-photographed. It also avoids long stretches of downtime where you’re paying for coverage but there’s little happening — so you get great photos without unnecessary cost.

How to Stretch Coverage Without Adding Hours

With a little planning you can get beautiful results and save money. These practical tips help you make the most of 5–6 hours:

Skip dinner coverage
Candid photos of guests eating are rarely the best use of photographer time. If you want candid dinner shots, ask a trusted family member or friend to take a few. Better candid moments usually happen right after the ceremony when guests are mingling and expressions are natural — not seated at a table.

Make your entrance count
Plan a lively, music-backed entrance that sparks energy and interaction. Dancing as you enter or including family and the bridal party creates a “party-starter” moment that looks incredible in photos and can replace the need for extended evening coverage.

Move the formal cake shot earlier
Photographing the cake before dinner lets caterers cut and serve it immediately and avoids the need for extra late-night coverage. This simple scheduling tweak often saves an extra hour or more.

Schedule a purposeful late-night moment
If you want a dramatic late-night shot (e.g., a formal dance or sparkler exit), schedule it deliberately rather than hoping it will happen spontaneously. When it’s planned, we can capture it efficiently within your booked hours.

When You Might Need More Than 5–6 Hours

Every wedding is unique. You may need longer coverage if:

  • Your ceremony and reception are in different towns or venues
  • There are multiple locations for getting ready, first look, or portraits
  • You want coverage through the entire reception, late-night dancing, or a staged sunset shoot
  • You have extended vendor set-up (large bands, fireworks, or theatrical elements)

We’ll tailor a package for larger or more complex days, including travel across Tasmania and to Queensland.

Local experience that matters
Shooting weddings across Tasmania (and in Queensland) for 25+ years means we know local light, venues, and logistics. Whether it’s a Hobart waterfront ceremony, a cellar-door reception in the Huon Valley, or a beach elopement on the north coast, a wedding in Launceston,  we plan coverage to suit your location and timeline, delivering consistent results every time.

Quick timeline: What 5–6 hours typically looks like

  • Hour 1: Getting ready (bride or groom)
  • Hour 2: Ceremony and congratulations
  • Hour 3: Couple portraits and bridal-party shots
  • Hour 4: Family formals and venue detail shots
  • Hour 5: Reception entrance and speeches
  • Hour 6: First dance and early reception candids

This timeline is flexible; we always adapt to your priorities and the flow of the day.
