Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places in Australia to say “I do.”
With its rugged coastlines, rolling hills, heritage estates and ever-changing skies, it’s a wedding photographer’s paradise.
But when you’re planning your special day, a common question often arises: what’s the best season for wedding photos in Tasmania?
The short answer? There’s no single best season. Each one offers something unique – from golden sunsets in summer to snow-dusted romance in winter.
The key lies in understanding the qualities of each season and planning your ceremony and photo timings to suit.
What is the best season for wedding photos?
Tasmania offers stunning light and landscapes all year round. Rather than focusing on finding the best season, think about what mood or setting you’d like in your photos.
Do you dream of warm summer evenings? Or maybe you’re picturing autumn leaves or a springtime bloom?
With the right timing and a little insider knowledge, every season can provide breathtaking results.
Let’s explore what each time of year offers for wedding photography in Tasmania.
Summer
Summer is a popular choice for weddings in Tasmania. And for good reason.
With daylight saving in full swing, the evenings stretch on, offering gorgeous golden light until late. This is unlike Queensland, which doesn’t benefit from daylight saving.
That extra time gives us more flexibility to shoot during the “golden hour”. This is the beautiful, soft light just before sunset.
However, summer does come with a few challenges. The sun can be intense, creating harsh shadows and squinting in midday photos. Plus, ceremonies held later to catch the best light may tire out guests, particularly during long receptions.
With years of experience photographing summer weddings, I know exactly where to find (or create) pockets of flattering shade and how to time things just right—so even the brightest days become an asset, not a hurdle.
Autumn
Autumn in Tasmania is breathtaking. The landscape transforms into a rich tapestry of reds, golds, and oranges, offering a warm, romantic backdrop that feels straight out of a fairytale.
This season is ideal for couples who want colour, mood, and depth in their images.
I recommend holding your ceremony around 3 PM, with photos scheduled between 4 and 5 PM.
During this window, the light is soft and golden – perfect for capturing that dreamy autumn glow without feeling rushed.
Winter
Winter weddings are underrated but can be incredibly beautiful. Think misty mornings, crisp air and cosy romantic vibes. The light in winter tends to be diffused and flattering all day, with none of the harsh brightness summer brings.
To make the most of the daylight, it’s best to schedule your ceremony earlier (I would say around 2 PM) and encourage guests to dress warmly. Blankets, shawls, and even hot drinks can add to the charm and comfort of a winter celebration.
Spring
Spring is all about new beginnings, making it a symbolic and stunning season to get married.
Tasmania blooms with fresh flowers, soft greens and vibrant gardens. It’s ideal for romantic, nature-inspired photos.
The weather is usually mild. The days begin to stretch longer. The light has a fresh, clear quality that works beautifully in portraits.
Whether you’re planning a garden wedding or a scenic elopement, spring provides a gentle, joyful atmosphere for your photos.
